Healthy Eating as a Vegetarian

Don’t think you’re making healthy food choices simply by giving up meat. Believe it or not, it is possible to be an unhealthy vegetarian. Diets based on cheese pizza, pasta with creamy sauces, packaged snack foods, french fries and sugary drinks don’t do you or your heart any favors. Whether you eat meat or not, pay attention to fat intake and eat plenty of whole grain foods and a variety of vegetables and fruits every day for good health.
If you want to be on a healthy vegetarian diet, you must pay close attention to your protein intake. Most people are able to get their daily intake from meat, eggs and dairy products. Cutting this out means you have to obtain your protein from other sources. Nuts, beans and soy products like tofu are the most common substitutes for a vegetarian diet. You can also include cheese in your diet but risk a high fat intake along with it.
Whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables will be the main ingredients of your diet. Unless you chose a Vegan diet, you are allowed eggs and dairy products as a source of protein. However if you are including dairy products in your diet, you'll want to stick to low-fat or non-fat varieties.
There are restrictions you must accept if you decide on a vegetarian diet. You must watch your fat intake and cooking for yourself is the better option for all meals. Keep in mind that a vegetarian diet does not always mean a healthy diet. Eating less meat or no meat does mean you are necessarily eating less fat. The key is to monitor everything you put on your plate.
Just remember that a vegetarian diet is only a healthy diet if you're responsible about it. Take the steps to do plenty of research before making this life change. It's a lifestyle and shouldn't be taken lightly. Ultimately, you'll benefit in the long run as you strive for better health.
